When asked to write about the dark side of his novel he explained it this way.
DG: I found it a little odd when I was asked to write about the dark side and why I choose to pen stories in this light, or lack of. My books have never been about trying to shock or show the underbelly of life, but rather keep a story, fiction as it is, as close to the reality many are aware, but never talk about.
My new book, the double novel Bleach|Blackout, is now available through Offense Mechanism, an imprint of Silverthought Press.
Bleach is a story about Jeremy, Midwest born and raised, now living in New York going back home for the holidays to find little has changed. In fact, things are more the same than ever before, leading him to fall back into his old habits of excessive drinking, drugs, and casual sex. Bleach recounts past New Year’s Eve parties as the story leads up to what will be the most devastating party yet where the guest of honor may or may not be coming through the door wielding a shotgun.
In Blackout, Jeremy is now staying in Los Angeles, where their friend Sharon is running a brothel. The first chapter details Stoner’s bachelor party in Las Vegas, ending on the floor of Sharon’s house in L.A. with cops standing over them and no memory of how the night ended. Blackout, explores the value of life and how it can change at any moment, hence the need for Jeremy to live in the present. Heroin bars. Cocaine bars, and a bizarre court case Blackout ultimately turns from a story about living into a story about revenge, and then back again.
In each, Bleach and Blackout, how the characters live, and their lack of morals, or even numbness regarding their actions is detailed without judgment. In our own lives we are responsible for our choices. After the fact, there may be opinions, changes, or even regret based on those choices; however, in the moment there is no judgment, only choice.
This book attempts to explore this, and look at the choices made when living for the moment with little regard for the future. Jeremy, Sharon, Chip, and Stoner live through their addictions, it is how they move forward and deal with the present. Change is always an option, but not high on the priority list of this group. Writing and reading about constant abuse and the search for bliss is not for all. This book is not for everyone, as Bleach starts, “If you enjoy romance novels, This book may not be for you.”
