About the book:
First on the scene of a traffic accident that turns out to be murder, Officer Stacey Wilbur calls Detective Doug Milligan. Despite her former vow to never date anyone on the Rocky Bluff P.D., she and Milligan are romantically involved. Finding time to be alone together isn’t easy.

The murder victim is the wife of a popular Rocky Bluff minister, and several suspects immediately come to the forefront, the minister himself, his nosy secretary, the choir director, and a nerdy stalker. Stacey helps Doug with the murder investigation, but the Chief asks her to go undercover as a prostitute to expose a pedophile which leads to a surprising job offer.

Stacey must make two major decisions that will change her life forever, and a third that nearly causes her to lose her life.

Hi Marilyn a.k.a. F.M. Meredith,

Welcome to Paperback Writer.

Will you share with us how you came up with the idea for this book?

No Sanctuary is the latest in the Rocky Bluff crime series. Because I already have a cast of characters, it was just a matter of deciding which ones I wanted to have the most important parts in this book and what crimes they would be faced with. Always I want to show how the job of being a law enforcement officer affects the family and what’s happening in the family affects the job. In this particular book, I had several ideas I wanted to incorporate, two different churches, two different types of ministers and problems they might have—plus something I’d heard about at a Sisters in Crime meeting.

Do you plan your stories first with an outline or does it come to you as write it?
I don’t actually outline, but I do jot down notes as I go along. I have a fairly good idea of where I’m headed, but don’t always know how I’m going to get there. Part of the fun of writing, is the unexpected things that pop into your head about the story and the people.

Do you know the end of the story at the beginning?
Usually I have a pretty good idea of how the book will end, though often I’m surprised when I realize it needs to go in a totally different direction.

Do you have a process for developing your characters?
Because I already know a lot of the characters in the series, I only have to come up with the bad guys and the victims and those who are affected by what they do. I do write a lot of notes about each person so I know how they will react to different situations.

It is said that authors write themselves into their characters. Is there any part of you in your characters and what they would be?
No, I can’t say that, though I always think about how I would act if I were this person and in this situation. I try to get inside each point-of-view character as I’m writing from their perspective.

What is your most favorite part about this book?
I really like Officer Stacey Wilbur. Though she is small of stature, she always manages to find her way out of difficult situations—even deadly ones. She’s come to be my favorite character even though she wasn’t even present in the first couple of Rocky Bluff P.D. books. I loved writing the most exciting scene in the book where she realizes who the murderer is and her life is threatened.

When in the process of writing your book did you begin to look for a publisher?
This series is on its third publisher. After the first two were published, I wasn’t happy with the fact that the third wasn’t coming out in a timely manner. The next publisher I found I really liked, but unfortunately, she decided to close shop. I’d met Billie Johnson, the publisher of Oak Tree Books at a Public Safety Writers Conference three years ago and have seen her at the following conferences. We became close friends. When I lost my publisher I asked if she’d be interested in publishing No Sanctuary. I spoke at her publishing company’s writing conference last fall and signed the contract then.

What struggles have you had on the road to being published?
Oh my. My very first book was rejected nearly 30 times. I had unfortunate experiences with two crooked publishers. Two of my publishers died. I’ve been a writer for a long, long time and it’s been a difficult road—and a most rewarding journey.

What has been the best part about being published?
When someone tells me they loved a book I’ve written. I don’t think I could stop writing—these characters keep telling me what they want to do next.

What do you want readers to remember and carry with them after reading your novel?
Probably that law enforcement officers are just like all the rest of us—and that they have a difficult job that affects their personal lives and all those around them.

Do you have plans to write another book?
I already have the next book in the series done and working on another. Writing is what I do.

Would you care to share with us how the virtual book tour experience with Pump Up Your Book Promotion has been for you?

This is my third tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion and I love doing them. It’s amazing how many different questions people ask and it’s great fun talking about my books.

  1. Great interview ladies. Actually, Marilyn, I think this is the fourth tour. Two for the Deputy Tempe Crabtree books–Judgment Fire and Kindred Spririts–and the last two books of the Rocky Bluff P.D. series–Smell of Death and No Sanctuary. I actually had to look it up myself. LOL!

There are so many things to enjoy about both series of books, and I honestly have a hard time deciding which ones I like best. I’m really enjoying this Stacey Wilbur and Doug Milligan match up. I can’t wait to see where it leads.
