False Pretenses Excerpt One
“Well, it all comes down to tonight,” said the anchorman at the country’s #1 rated TV network. “After more than a year of campaigning, criss-crossing the country, kissing babies and shaking hands – this is it.
“The polls are open all around the country, and getting ready to close on the East Coast. The final polls showed the candidates in a dead heat as late as last night. With the margin of error, it could either way. Tell, George, how do you think it’s going to end?”
“Well, Brian, it’s really too hard to say. If the minority vote turns out, that will favor Lesser. If they don’t, it benefits Reeves.
“I have a feeling that this is going to go down to the wire, with much of America going to sleep tonight with knowing who will be their next President.”
“I have to agree with you. We’re in for a long night.”
False Pretenses Excerpt Two
Lesser walked out into the room and all talking came screeching to a halt. The room got quiet and the silence was deafening. Lesser started to address the gathering. “I just got word from FOX News that, apparently, Michigan isn’t going to go to us, but rather to Reeves. If this is the case, so will the election.
“We’re trying to get some information right now that will either dispute their statement or corroborate it. All our information as of this afternoon indicated that Michigan should be ours, but in elections, anything can happen, and just might have tonight.
False Pretenses Excerpt Three
“I just got word of a possible change to a state that was called for us. Michigan, it seems, may not go our way. As you know, this was a close race, and without Michigan, we won’t win the presidency.
“We felt very strongly that Michigan was in our corner, but it’s possible that the vote won’t turn out that way. Rest assured, we will be looking into the vote in Michigan, and will let everyone know what transpires as soon as we know more.
