Four Rescue Special Need Dogs, One Women and Lots of Love

Real Dogs Don't Whisper

Real Dogs Don’t Whisper

One might ask; how on Earth did you arrive with four dogs having special needs and how they have impacted my life?  First, I had no idea that four dogs with special needs would be entering my life it was all by chance.  I did not go out looking for them or decided one day that I was going to rescue them.  It just happened unexpectedly. They each came to me during random times; upon learning of their condition(s), I did not turn them away. I knew in my heart that God had a plan for me, not sure what it was, just knew these four came into my life for a reason.

The impact they have made in my life has been insightful, astounding and humbling to say the least.  I often say, it wasn’t I that rescued them, it was them rescuing me.  See, I was heading down a negative path, they each gave me hope for tomorrow, a purpose; they gave me love and I learned along the way to love and open my heart. They came into my life in the purest form of love; they remind me that life is a gift and love is my most precious possession.

With them in my life, they have inspired me to raise awareness for special need pets; how they will enrich one’s life and provide priceless life lessons.

About Real Dogs Don’t Whisper

The award winning book, Real Dogs Don’t Whisper (www.realdogsdontwhisper.com), which highlights my life journey caring for four special needs dogs and the life lessons they taught me along the way.  The overall message within Real Dogs Don’t Whisper is about giving those with special needs a second chance.  The book touches on integrity, unconditional love, leadership, trust, stopping abuse and opening your heart to receive and give both unconditional love and friendship.  To lighten the message, I developed a co-author, Mr MaGoo; Mr MaGoo is my Lhasa Apso and he is larger than life.  He adds humor within the book; sharing with the reader how life is so tough for him being the only male in the house and living with a crazy lady, me.

Mr. MaGoo is a nine-year-old Lhasa Apso and the book’s co-creator and co-writer. He is, in his own words, “the alpha and omega of all dogs – in the cutest and sparkiest, most fun-loving package ever.” Ignoring Kelly’s persistent eye-rolling, Mr. MaGoo has forged ahead with this project in an attempt to, as he puts it, “present the facts from a dog’s perspective. In other words, the correct, most accurate, most interesting, only-one-that-matters perspective,” to which he adds, simply, “Woof!”

About Kelly Preston

Author Kelly Preston

Kelly Preston is, first and foremost, an animal lover. Raised on a ten-acre property in a small town in Pennsylvania, she grew up with horses, rabbits, and – of course – dogs. When she left home after college, she acquired Gizmo, an irresistible Lhasa Apso that started her on a journey full of joys and sorrows, hopes and tribulations, frustrations, endless lessons in patience, and above all else, love. All of this has come at the hands (more precisely the paws) of Gizmo, Betty Boop, Buffy, Carla Mae, and the inimitable Mr. MaGoo.

Read the Book Excerpt

It was at that very moment I realized Carla Mae was not just an angry, aggressive little cuss I taught to play and dance and cut loose. I saw Carla Mae for the first time as she really was—a scared puppy who learned to mistrust those around her and who learned self-preservation the only way she knew how—by biting first and asking questions later. She was a frightened little dog who eventually found a greater lesson in letting go and learning to laugh and play and yes, of course—dance. Carla Mae found unconditional love in our family and along the way, she learned to trust. Anyway, as for Dim-Bulb King, cooler heads prevailed that day and, lucky for him, his human finally dragged him away from us. But I sure learned something about my new sister that day.

Carla Mae turned out to be a competitive little tomboy and fair adversary. We love to play Kibble Attack—a game that involves her patiently planning preemptive Kibble invasions, only to be taken off guard by a MaGoo surprise maneuver, overrun and forever a close second only to me. She’s quite the copycat as well, often mimicking our moves. I’m not sure if she’s mocking us all, doing the “when in Rome thing”, or a little of both. What I do know is that I have learned to love Carla Mae and Carla Mae has learned to accept love and even try to nudge in on my petting time with the human and even with random human strangers in the house. She is loved and cared for and Carla Mae is no longer afraid… well, maybe a little afraid of King Crazy Dog, but who wouldn’t be? Other than me, of course.

Hi Kelly

Welcome to Paperback Writer.

Thank you Rebecca, we are excited to be featured this week

Author Kelly Preston and her dogs

Q: Would you explain what the title of your book means.

When I realized that I was going to have Mr MaGoo as my co-author, I took into account his personality and his daily antics.  Mr MaGoo is larger than life, very animated and nothing he does is softly or quiet as a whisper.  Additionally, since this book is about life and lessons that can be taught to us by our pets; I crafted the title based on Mr MaGoo and the goal.

Q:  Would you share with us how you came up with the idea for your book?

Having four special need dogs that were rescued, there were times in my life that people in my life just didn’t understand why I needed to leave a party early; or, why I wasn’t able to travel.  I wanted to share my rewarding experience; wanted to raise awareness for rescue pets, especially those with special needs.  I felt the need to share my experiences to help, inspire and motivate others.

Q:  Was it a light bulb moment or something that you thought about for a very long time?

It was a light bulb moment, clearly out of the blue.  I clearly remember the moment; the gentlemen that I was dating for several months ended the relationship, he said some mean things about my one dog.  That was when I decided to write a book to educate others and help pets in need.  Once I decided to write my book, I reached out to FACE Foundation (www.face4pets.org) to arrange an agreement that a portion of my book proceeds goes to FACE.

Q:  What kind of research went into the book?

No research was needed since this is based on my life, my pets, and my experiences.  Just needed to go back through a lot of emails, working with my veterinarian on dates and diagnosis.

Thank you, Kelly for stopping by Paperback Writer. I wish you continued success with your tour.

Excerpt

WAHOOOOO!! I’m a dog writer, I’m a dog writer. Writing up a storm. I am loving life today! The human had to go out of town on business (whatever that means) and we are home alone with the sitter. Home alone, Home-a-lone! Life is good; we’re home alone!!!

And, get this, because the dog sitter is here—I have a personal assistant today. I told her all about my book and she was amazed. I also told her that I required doggy treats every hour on the hour. Such a beautiful, naive thing. Though, admittedly she is quite kind and loving and does everything in her power to please me and help care for my sisters. Whatever the human is paying her, I‟m sure it‟s not enough.

What are “business trips” and why does the human take them? Where does she go? Why can’t she do her business right here like the rest of us? How long will she be gone? How much writing can I get done in the interim? When the human’s away, the dogs shall play!

Well kids—might as well get down to the matter at hand. I have the human’s notes right here in front me. She was planning on using this chapter to tell you all about Betty Boop. As if she could possibly know more about Betty Boop than I do! Please.

I‟ve skimmed through the whole shebang and I don‟t see a lot of worthwhile material. So—I‟m pitching her impressions and starting from scratch. You can thank me later.
